Tour of Mississippi Watershed Management Organization at 10:00 AM

The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) works to protect and improve water quality, habitat and natural resources in an urban watershed that drains directly into the Mississippi River. They are a joint-powers local government unit and one of approximately three dozen watershed organizations in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The MWMO encompasses 25,309 acres (39.5 square miles) of fully developed urban lands and waters. They partner with member communities to invest in green infrastructure that captures, cleans and reuses stormwater runoff. Their team monitors and tracks water quality in the watershed and conducts education and outreach to promote active environmental stewardship among residents. On our tour we will learn more about the work of the MWMO. We will gain knowledge of watershed and stormwater basics, including water pollution prevention tips, and we will learn how we can help. The MWMO facility is located at 2522 Marshall St. NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418.  Please RSVP to Aileen at fritzdoris@comcast.net if you plan to take part in this interesting Spring Tour! It helps the MWMO with planning to have an approximate headcount.

2024 Peace Officer Memorial Day Ceremony at 12:00 PM

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. In Minneapolis, National Peace Officers Memorial Day is commemorated each May through a joint ceremony between the Minneapolis Police Department and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. At this ceremony, law enforcement and civic leaders provide remarks before the names of Officers and Deputies killed in the line of duty are read out and a bell is tolled for each as a symbol of our continued remembrance. The 2024 Peace Officer Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at 12:00 noon on Friday, May 17th in front of City Hall.  You will immediately see the spot as 4th Street will be blocked off and there will be chairs and an elevated area with a podium and a fire truck. Please arrive by 11:45 AM to be seated. Please RSVP to Aileen at fritzdoris@comcast so that we can save a seat for you.
